APMSX card is a computer card for APPLE II.

It is a MSX computer and slot type for APPLE II.

It runs with APPLE II not just sit on slot.

It isn't a emulated FPGA MSX card  It has own Z80 CPU with 512KB SRAM with TTL logics and CPLD(Which is only used to reduce lots of TTL chips).

APMSX work very closely with APPLE II.

It access APPLE II memory or I/O of APPLE II.

APPLE II and APMSX can communicate each other. 

Both systems have common shared memory area.

The common area are include APPLE II's I/O area($Cxxx) and memory area, APMSX could access APPLE II's peripheral such as HDD(SD DISKII plus) even Mocking board could make it work.

In the beginning of APMSX design, I share whole memory area of APPLE II and it's looks good and both are work as brain shared computer. but, It became bottle neck of the system on both. They can't run full speed when it open as shared.

APMSX works 7.16Mhz(Two times of MSX) speed and while access sharing area, Z80 and APPLE II BUS have to synchronized and results APMSX become slow.

Because of this performance issue, I redesign to small share area. 

And finally 16KB of Page2 on MSX.

Anyway, I'm still considering if I need to make it adjust the size of share.

Now I have Max. 256KB RAM (If MegaROM mapper ON, It will be 128KB)

It's enough RAM on MSX1 system.

I hope that someone could use this size of memory for nice program for DOS2 or Game runner.

APMSX has integrated ROM mapper for Mega Games.

ASCII 8K , ASCII 16K and Konami mapper support.

8K Mapper auto detect if it required a Konami or ASCII 8K Mapper.

(8K <> 16K have to selecte before to start game)

A2Z80Plus is new Z80 card for APPLE II.

It compatible to PCPI Appli-card and enhanced for VDP-1000plus.

It runs as 16Mhz PCPI Appli-card andmore fast SG1000 / Colecovision game console.

and having many functions you never see even similar one with other Z80 cards.

Also could run MSX BASIC

PCPI Z80 card is one of Z80 card for CP/M.

This PCPI Z80plus have flexibility and faster Z80 run and have extension port for more fun functions.

It have to test it but, I need 6502 source code for TMS9918 and Sound chip.

If someone have simple 6502 code for TMS9918 testing.. It would be nice demo sample for it.

Anyway, the Address of TMS9918 is same as SEGA1000.

Please help for good sample codes then I could test Z80 BUS devices direct on APPLE II(6502).

Here is my second step for Appli-card Z80 with VDP Option board.

What is VDP Option board?

It starts to support the VDP Option board with 3.58Mhz Original speed.

Both of game are bigger than 32KB and it was hard to load on Z80 Turbo7 structure.

But, New board could support it without memory conflict problem.

Even Turbo speed support but the VDP chip can't run faster speed..

So, This project just remain turbo step control.

It would support some sort of clocks 3.58Mhz 7.16Mhz and 4Mhz, 8Mhz, 16Mhz...

I want the smooth step switching and VDP support even on high clock speed..

* Loading program is very similar the case of the Z80 Turbo7 card with VDP Option board..

Another Appli-card is building now.

I'm doing firmware job and hope to make it work soon.

This board is simple design and would work with VDP Option board.

Z80 would work 3.58Mhz and 7.16Mhz but will try Maximum speed of CPU.

I'm working for Z80 board on APPLE //c.

After several things hardware bug fixed, It start to boot CP/M as under.

This board is plug on CPU socket on APPLE //c.

And working as the same as Z80 softcard.

Working stable now.

It need to change some parts to make properly.

The PCB needs change some points...

Anyway, I also will try it for APPLE //c+ and hope to make it run on //c+.

Please wait for another toy on APPLE //c.

Unfortunately, It can't exist with Mockingboard 4c.

I will consider if I could make combined one board (MB4c with Z80 board)

Some weeks later, you could see completed Z80 co-processor board for APPLE //c.

Dear friends,

I started to make another Z80 processor card for APPLE II.

I have though it since I made the Z80 Turbo7 card.

As you may know, the Z80 Turbo7 card is Z80 softcard compatible one but, when I finished it,

I received some of email, they are want another type of Z80 card, PCPI compatible one.

In fact, I didn't have interest in the PCPI Z80 card cause of I didn't have experience and no child time memory with it.

But, It looks interesting.. cause it works 4Mhz or 6Mhz even faster...

On my study of Softcard, it can't run so fast because of this designed really depend on APPLE II BUS.

But PCPI card doesn't use APPLE II Bus for memory access.

It has different design and method unlike Z80 softcard.

For some weeks study about the PCPI Z80 card, I finally understood how it works.

Now, I finished drawing PCB and ordered.

I will assemble and will test for full functioning PCPI compatible card.

Andmore, I add signal pins for VDP Option board hence finally it would work with the VDP option board so it would work 4Mhz or even faster speed.

I already experienced with TMS9918(VDP) and I'm sure to make it run with faster speed of Z80.

Target Speed of Z80 is depends on the what I could have hence I will try even 16Mhz or more...

And more good thing with this PCPI card.

* User may access the VDP Option board without Z80 co-work, 

It means, 65C02 would handle the VDP and Sound chip direct. It results could have as another Arcade board on APPLE II.

You may see another PCPI compatible card some weeks later..

* Next steps;

In fact this Z80 isn't the final goal.

I will use Z180 processor on this PCPI design and it would work as Z80 and even Z180 function could use on this board and you could expect higher speed.. Maybe 33Mhz would work with this design.

Is it good enough for your Z80 compatible PCPI card?

Please watch what I could complete..

* What is disadvantage of PCPI Z80 card;

Many of people just know advantage of the PCPI Z80 card but, 

They are not know about the weakness of PCPI card.. so, I'm explaining to let them know the truth..

You would interesting about my concern.
Softcard using APPLE II's RAM direct and syncing APPLE II Bus.

Otherwise PCPI card is isolated and using gates to receive/transmit data between 65C02 with Z80.

Softcard Z80 could use direct the APPLE II devices without service call.

Even speaker sound, it could make simply on ASM code even Basic(Just need proper address of device on APPLE II)

Keyboard direct reading or Joystick reading also possible.

Also Peripheral card and 64KB AUX memory also could access even more memory could access by it.

As we know the soft switch on APPLE II, Softcard could handle it.

One of good example is GBASIC.

It could handle the graphic mode on APPLE II. 

If you could do some more, maybe DHGR also possible..

But, PCPI card, can't do all of above or limited possible.

But faster on CP/M works.

So, Which is interesting on your hobby job.

If you are willing to use APPLE II resources, go Softcard Z80 card.

If you are willing to use CP/M enhanced hobby, go to the PCPI Z80 card.

This is my conclusion.

Please don't argue with it we are doing it for fun not for serious job with headaches :)

I would like to inform you I've started for Z80 softcard board for APPLE //c.

It would be sit over the CPU socket on APPLE //c same method as the Mockingboard 4c

It would work as you have Z80 softcard slot#4 and could RUN CP/M OS on your APPLE //c.

You could run FORTRAN 80, COBOL 80, dBase II, Turbo Pascal etc..

Mostly for study computer Languages and productivity applications not for games... 

Z80 card for APPLE //e was done as Z80 Turbo7 but, now it will go for APPLE //c.

This board is just prototype board and there are several missing..

Anyway someday, we could have Z80 co-processor board on APPLE //c.

How to update firmware

WARNING

! Your APPLE][ must not fail electric power while the firmware updating.  

If this happens, the SD Disk][ may to fail restart, or you won't be able to update firmware anymore.

In this case, please return the board to me for re-programming. (Free of charge to fix this issue but all shipping costs will be your responsibility).

If you are ready to upgrade, please read first and follow below carefully

1) Power OFF the APPLE][ and open the cover.

2) Eject SD Memory card

3) Copy new firmware(SDBIOS.ROM) to ROOT directory.

4) Push Dial button(YES) +Exit button simultaneously, then power ON the APPLE][

5) Then release button some seconds later then You will see as 'system check..................................' on LCD and S/W terminal screen.

6) A while later, SD DISK][ Emulator will restart automatically.

7) Power OFF/ON your APPLE II and enjoy it.

Please watch this video and compare Mockingboard with this FM sound quality.

Another version of SD Music card is testing now.

Previous version had some timing issue on APPLE ][+ so, some APPLE ][+ clone works so, I recommended APPLE //e.

APPLE ][+ and APPLE //e doesn't have same on expansion slot.

To discover it, I used a CPLD and now works perfect APPLE ][+ and //e. ( IIgs technical issue is the same as mocking board) 

This new version have same sound character but, it has nice function.

I will introduce it again.

Please wait for the SD Music card again and enjoy nice music programing even on APPLE ][+.

Hi Friends,

I would like to add PO image format support on SD DISKII Plus.

In fact, the PO format is almost similar as 'DSK' format. 

and Just rename PO file to DSK, It would work.

It just has different sector order for prodos but, DOS3.3 also can read it.

IBM PC HDD using this idea as the interleave.

Anyway, I add converter function in it.

It works now and will include into new release firmware version.

Hi, Friends,

I trying to make MSX External SLOT on APMSX card.

It took too long time to make it work.

Hardly found some error on the board and fixed.

Also needed to adjust circuits on CPLD as MSX one.

Finally I have working screen as under.

It is just game screen but, this game is from ROM pack not data loading from APPLE //e.

It has some stability issue with external ROM. I'm working on it now.

If I didn't plan to make a external SLOT on APMSX, I could complete it but, It took long time for ultimate MSX card in APPLE II.

Firmware version 2.59U for SD DISK II Plus

What's new?

1) Power ON Boot wait issue.

;If used with other device, it may just wait while Power ON Boot.

it happen only FDD Mode. not HDD mode.

It is happened when Reset line hold little longer.

Now, it works good.

2) Power ON file list updated

When Power ON boot, the directory doesn't show when turn the Rotary..

So, use needed to exit and come again..

Now you can see file list of Power ON boot directory without exit and back again..

How to updates it.

Copy the file to SD Memory card and Power ON the APPLE II while pressing EXIT and Dial.

This is 2nd commercial version of Mockingboard 4c.

First version was sold out so, I needed to prepare more PCB for Mockingboard 4c.

I little adjust the sound input level and sound doesn't off to avoid OFF popping sound.

And CPU little relocated to upper for easy soldering for me.

Sound little improved and easier to solder by me.

I'm testing compatibility and works 100% as Mockingboard C.

Please wait some weeks for next batch of Mockingboard 4c.

Dear friends,

I developed the SD Music card to enhance old mockingboard of APPLE II.

In fact, I love this approach and sound quality.

In that version,

I replaced all electrolytic capacitors to tantalum capacitors for better sound quality and life.

And used RC filter on output AMP and some more improved.

But, It has compatibility issue following part's LOT#. It means that some chips works on some model with some software running.

In fact, After made this board, I've tested it on my APPLE //e and ][+ with SKYFOX and Ultima 4,5 before to ship. All fine then I sent it.

It works fine on APPLE //e even IIGS with Mockingboard patch.

But, I found it didn't work some software and some of APPLE ][+ model.

I really having hard time to find this cause...

It is happen because of the 6522 timing doesn't match well on APPLE II with 6502 CPU.

With some more research, I could find good way to overcome this issue and quickly applied on new PCB for SD Music card.

Sample card ordered and waiting for this.

On the CPLD testing, It works perfect on my APPLE //e and ][+ with all softwares.

and will test some of APPLE ][+ clones..

Please wait for some weeks for new board.

I will post when I have new board with testing results.

1st Mockingboard 4c all sold out and preparing another revision.

In this version have minor upgrade, Enhanced sound quality.

1st Mockingboard 4c sound little like over driven sound so, I tuned it under proper level, It's little better.

And the CPU socket was relocated to upper for easy soldering. I had hard to solder this area...

It is testing board.

There is no Mute pin but, I will keep the Mute pin even rare used by user.

Ordered another sample PCB for testing..
