APPLE II using 6502 CPU and there are another 8 bits CPU Z80 is one of famous one too.

In fact, APPLE II can use both of CPU Z80 and 6502 but, It was almost forgotten technology how to applied it on APPLE II.

Hence, I started to make Z80 card and it will work as a softcard for CP/M.

Used Z80 CPU and some chips.

Major control chip will use a CPLD to act as Softcard and started wiring.

Wiring always hard job but, but have to check all of lines to make sure to avoid mistake connection.

I was took long hours and needed adjust wires to fix my mistakes.

I set chips and added some more wiring for proper emulate the Softcard.

I did research about the softcard and could learn about the DMA works and RDY and the trick of timing for Z80 CPU.

My plan is several steps,

First, I want make it run the CP/M OS.

For this I will apply some slow Mhz and try to make it run as Softcard.

I think that it is possible to make it run 1Mhz and it would be easier than other faster speed.

Then Try other faster speed.

2Mhz is original softcard and at least have to reach this speed to make feel same as what I experienced by the CP/M by softcard.

The final softcard make it run as 7Mhz..

It is the maximum possibility with softcard design I guess.

Anyway, there is a reference of 7Mhz CP/M.

Dear All,

It is a great music program(http://www.ctrl-pomme-reset.fr/french-touch/) and now it can play on Mockingboard 4c.

I wanted to play it on APPLE //c and patched it and running on //c.

NSCT.nib

It sometimes required Manual ON,(Please refer the manual) then works properly.

I also hope to play others and waiting for newer version for APPLE //c.

PS2 keyboard adapter for APPLE II and II+

INTRODUCTION

It is the improved second version of PS2 adapter for APPLE ][ and ][ plus.

It support LED indicator on PS2 keyboard and improved Keyboard key 

detecting method.

You can use PS2 Keyboard on your APPLE ][ and ][+.

It is more than just an adapter. I prepared some useful functions for you.

FEATURES

Support LED on your Keyboard

PS2 keyboard have 3 LED indicator and this PS2 adapter using it for indicator for

Numlock and Caps lock. It will ON/OFF as followed Keyboard status.

Support Macro key

You can assign your key array on each function key.

For example, You can put ‘CATALOG’ command in F1 and when you need it, 

Just press F1 then It will key-in ‘CATALOG’ for you. 

This function prepared F1,F2 and F4 to F12

All assigned macro data store into EEPROM  

If you want re type the last line. F3 is the key for Recall the last line.

It can hold maximum 40 letters.

F3 recall can hold up to 255 letters and not store into EEPROM.

Lower and upper case support

If your APPLE II support Lower case, The Caps lock key will work for you.

Your APPLE II must have support lowercase fonts.

Shift +(letter) is always Capital letter.

Number key pads

Your number keypad is always working so indicate the NumLock LED ON.

Arrow keys

Upper and Lower Arrow key is support same as the APPLE //e.

Backspace is remapped to <- (Left arrow).

CTRL+Reset

It assigned to CTRL + BREAK and CTRL+ Scroll Lock.

Auto repeat

Simply keep press..

Help Message

Press 'Alt+ESC' then It will key-in the Help message. Please do it on APPLE Prompt ']'

I will update when I finished testing.

* Mockingboard can do OFF when it Pressed CTRL+ RESET.

But, from this batch of product, 

It wound't OFF Until Power OFF. It means that If you triggered the manual ON then It wouldn't OFF even CTRL+RESET Pressed. If you want OFF, You have to Power OFF and ON again.

I found The Music Construction Set allow to use CTRL+RESET. So, It would be better to support for Exist Software.

* One general question was Mouse support.

After Manual ON the mockingboard, Mouse can't work together, cause of It is using same slot#4 so, mouse firmware can't be accessed. 

You can't use Mockingboard and Mouse at the same time until Power ON Reboot.

Please understand this mechanism.

TTL UART isn't very good to use the APPLE //c.

Just for fun you can use the APPLE //c or control //c via the Wireless connection and/or bluetooth connection.

I've tested the Bluetooth connection and works even can play game.

But, if you can't find any good PS2 keyboard or just want to use remote keyboard via the UART connection, It would be wonderful method for you.

I spend some hours to support it for you.

it isn't the same as PS2 keyboard hence, you have to know some more to use full way.

You can send key data to APPLE //c via the UART (115200 fixed BAUD rates)

If you connect it by serial terminal (The Tera term recommended), But, still you can use PS2 keyboard and/or APPLE //c own keyboard.

Most of all APPLE //c key are mapped except OPEN APPLE and CLOSED APPLE.

I tested all under the Tera term

Support All Arrow keys. You can play game via the Serial connection.

Support F5,F6,F7,F8 saving and recall macro support (Shift + Fn; Saving to Macro, Fn; recall macro)

Support F3; last line recall

Ctrl + Reset -> F12 ; I can't apply it to any other key. Just press F12 then APPLE //c will got Ctrl+Reset.

Tested it on the APPLE //c (Model#A2S4000 and A2S4100) not test on APPLE //c plus yet.

I've tested in on the Tera term and made it even support F5-F9 Macro keys.(Saving macro is Shift F5, Recall is just F5)

This is the final mockingboard 4c.

* Mockingboard 4c doesn't include the 65C02 CPU.

it is a setup photo.

It added Volume control line so, you can also control internal speaker volume by APPLE //c volume knob.

I connected AUX to earphone socket for external speaker.

Now, I'm making it for Koreans friends some board already shipped from last Friday.

I finished this design for APPLE //e.

Firmware task was done and works very well.

I added some important function for user conveniences.

1) You can save your key code as Macro.

You can assign your key data into F1~F12 (except F3. it used recall it means, it will retype what you typed before until Return)

2) You can also plug in your APPLE //e keyboard, It means you can still use your original APPLE //e keyboard at the same time and you can use PS2 keyboard together.

3) As you can see the photo, there is PS2 AUX pins prepared. You can use it to connect your own PS2 socket  to set your favorite position on APPLE //e (DIY project).

When I finished new PCB, I will put on eBay.

Please wait for this new conveniences device for your APPLE //e.

This keyboard adapter can use with your own keyboard and PS2 keyboard at the same time.

It is really nice but, I found some inconveniences.

if you keyin on APPLE //e keyboard with capslocks.

It was influence to PS2. so, it will typed only upper case. if you pushed the capslock on APPLE //e.

it followed original keyboard capslocks switch position.

But, I did seperated it.

Now, it following your keyboard.

For example,

If you key in lower case on APPLE //e keyboard. you can type lower case in there

but, if you set capslock on PS2 keyboard, it will work as you caplocks on PS2 keyboard.

even you ushed the capslocks on PS2 it would influence to APPLE //e keyboard.

This function is seperated not merged or influenced to other keyboard each other.

it is simple method but, it was complicate to work properly.

it looks good to me and I'm sure you also like it.

Now, I can order to make completed board.

** ADDED on 8th Feb.

There are different Keyboard chip for APPLE //e and //c.

My tested keyboard controller chip is AY-5-3600 and works great there.

But, I found another chip which was used //e platinum and //c 4100 model.

and this model used KR9600 PRO chip.

and found failed work on it.

I checked the reason why and there is negative control signal for key press detection.

I though i finished all for all APPLE //e.. but, there is important different between AY-5-3600 with KR9600 chip.

I started researching again for it.

Why this incompatible issue happened? 

APPLE used different keyboard controller due to some unopened issue. 

I'm not sure now, but, I guess there may happened signal overload when user press several keys at the same time.

I'm researching it but, I can't make it run properly. some key works with double pressing keys.. not perfectly work to use.

And now, my keyboard adapter works on AY-5-3600 chip but not for KR9600 keyboard controller.

I will announce again if I done to apply for all of //e.

** ADDED on 18th Feb.

I ordered PCB and it will be good for some of APPLE //e.

I will also keep try to support the KR9600 keyboard decoder chip but, I still didn't find good way to make it perfect.

It may need another H/W design to make it compatible for all type of APPLE //e.

Anyway, It would be a great choice to replace present keyboard who doesn't have good keyboard which APPLE //e used the KR3600 chip.

Here is some of major function of this PS2 Keyboard adapter.

1) Your can still use the present APPLE //e Keyboard at the same time.

2) Enhanced ASM programming, I used Assembly codes for accurate Keyboard Emulation.

3) Superb Macro memory support (Hold up to 250 letters)

Testing volume control by APPLE //c.

If you see the under of APPLE //c, you can finda dial for Volume control.

I decided to use it to for control sound volume for mockingboard 4c too.

And it is working.

It is simple idea but, was complicated to apply at least for me.

with the only +5V single voltage, it isn't easy to apply to control amplifier.

But make it to work as I expected.

As you can see from the 2nd photo, it required pull a line from one point of APPLE //c board.

It is required to control sound volume for Mockingboard 4c.

I ordered final PCBs and hope to have good and nice one for all of us.

I got several 10th orders from Korean APPLE //c fans.

We are waiting for final product and want to have happy time with it.

About 4 weeks later, I could put final prodcuts on eBay for international apple II fans .

If you like it and want to make your apple //c with good sound.

It would be a great chance to grab it.

I'm very proud of this mockingboard compatible sound card for the APPLE //c.

Some of people want a keyboard adapter for APPLE //e.

So, I made PCB and testing the function.

I designed it as small size and simple not complicated one.

Simple to use as

Just plug your PS2 keyboard and insert on keyboard socket of the APPLE //e.

This is my concept for this adapter board.

It works but there are still some of points to enhance.

After complete it, you can see it on eBay too.

I also have plan to make adapter for APPLE //c.

My one of APPLE //c had bad keyboard and I want to use a PS2 keyboard instead of it. and attach a PS2 socket on the //c case. so, simply plug in any PS2 keyboard and can use APPLE //c.

Isn't it good idea? :)

The APPLE //c has no expandable slot and it has no support by sound card such as Mockingboard.

So, If you play some game on //c, It would be some disadvantage compare to APPLE //e with mockingboard.

Due to this lack of this capability, I tried to build mockingboard compatible sound card and completed designed.

Now, It works very well as the Mockingboard A/C(no voice chip).

It was required accurate timing control and firmware conflict evasion techniques.

APPLE //c doesn't have I/O slot and I needed to make required signals.

For this, I used CPU socket for it.

This sound card can be used on APPLE Iic 4000and 4100 all models.(Not //c plus nor Laser128)

Tested more than several days and no any issued encountered.

I prepared a AUX sound connector for external speaker.

And two small speaker provided for pre-order users.

Anyway, I'm receiving pre-orders from the Korean APPLE II enthusiast,

About a month later, I will put some on eBay for international APPLE II enthusiast,

I'm trying to control the Sound volume as followed APPLE IIc one. but, it's harder than I expected.

Thanks for purchasing the SD Music card.

Due to the good approach for new Yamaha sound chip,

I made plan to enhance the SD Music card for better capability.

Now, I'm testing new SD Music card (Maybe Deluxe version).

It have a YMF262 OPL3 chip for sound generation.

It have good capabilities for Music and can have much more Music instruments.

It is generating Stereo sound with clean sound.

This YMF262 was used for some version of Sound Blaster for IBM PC.

YMF262 have below capabilities,

• 18 2-operator channels
• 15 2-operator channels + 5 drum channels (drum setting on)
• 6 2-operator channels + 6 4-operator channels (4-op setting on)
• 3 2-operator channels + 6 4-operator channels + 5 drum channels (both settings on)

It have maximum 18 channels, hence, it could more than Mocking board channels so, I want use the rest channels for music, and now looking for schematic of Phasor, I need IO address information how does it connected or control by APPLE II.

If some one know about the IO map or related information, Please let me know.

Anyway, I'm trying to understand all parts of YMF262 for similar emulation for mocking board and Phasor compatible card.

I built mocking board compatible sound card for APPLE IIc.

As we know, the APPLE IIc doesn't have any slot and can't use any peripherals.

Unlike APPLE ][, ][+, //e or IIgs.

Due to this big handicaps, Many of fans not like to play with APPLE IIc.

But, now, we can have good sound on our APPLE IIc.

It have a mocking board (Sound card) in it.

Who likes to play APPLE IIc? not only me but, may be you too.

On the video, I used the Smart Drive for APPLE IIc. it will power ON boot by Ultima5.

You also can see it supports internal INUSE light.

Due to APPLE IIc doesn't have slot.

I made all of required signal from CPU socket and some of tricks to make vacant for mocking board slot.

It works but there was a conflict between Mouse firmware and Mocking board.

It designed it to avoid the conflict and then finally working as expected.

I will integrate a AMP chip for speaker driving and Sound pins for external speaker.

I'm designing PCB for it and other components will be prepared soon.

You can have mocking board on your APPLE IIc and can enjoy games with Mocking board support.

It would be a lovely and compact, portable vintage APPLE IIc for you.

My APPLE IIc doesn't have good sound as //e. I can't use mocking board nor any other sound card for APPLE IIc.

For long time, I though if I could make a device for APPLE IIc. I will try for sound card for APPLE IIc.

Now, I started for it.

I built a simple board for APPLE IIc.

It have to insert on the position of CPU and taking all required signal from there.

And I used a CPLD to control lines for CPU and other chips(Sound chips and PIA).

CPU connected as transparent to the system and I could masking the C4xx for mocking boar slot.

First time, I got bus conflict as this.

But, successfully removed this error. anyway motherboard doesn't damaged with this impact.

Only C4xx area masked. so, mouse firmware is not there but, I can make it back as normal.

I have more wiring and need idea to take required signals without technical issue.

Also there is IRQ issue, it isn't the same as //e andmore there is no external example of IRQ on APPLE IIc.

Our APPLE IIc is small computer but, it have some disadvantages,

My wish for APPLE IIc are

Sound card

Lack of sound. very same as APPLE II internal speaker just it has more a volume control.

There is a external sound, External mocking board Mockingboard D. but, it couldn't be 100% compatible with previous announced S/W.  if not compatible to old S/W, it has limited way of use.

CP/M card

Yes, there is a CP/M card and it is not common and rare item.

Few of APPLE II fans have chance to use CP/M system. 

Anyway, CP/M have yery interesting compatible development tools and languages.

And my new plans.

1) Sound card

I considered it several times, how can I build it on APPLE IIc.

There is no slot.

Hence, to make sound card, I need to make Slot signal from APPLE IIc board.

So, I decide to get some signals from CPU.

CPU have all of signal so, it could be good choice to get lines.

So, APPLE IIc can run Mocking board?

No, there is conflict with internal mouse.

Mouse located on C400 (Slot#4) so, it should be switched off.

If address switched off.. 

there is still a problem left.. the IRQ service.

I need to experiment about this IRQ then could decide what could I do for it.

2)Z80 card

Z80 is one of best CPU on 8bits computer system.

And APPLE II CP/M card (Softcard) was very famous in that time. I'm still have a Z80 card(Clone)

But, to apply it on APPLE IIc..I need to make slot signal and some more idea..

Anyway, I'm researching how to handle the z80 CPU by APPLE II.

New device is one of exciting project.

Keep watch me how do I build it.

Anyway, it may fail several times.. but, I'm not afraid it.

I got a nice file from Mr. David Shaver.

He is one of my customer of SD DISK][ Emulator.

He has a Rana system FDD on APPLE ][ which have two heads and double capacity compare to DISK][.

He extracted disk from his old DISKETTE.

It would be useful if anyone has the RANA DRIVE.

Unfortunately I don't have it.

It boots as below but you need DOS3.3 booting disk to see files in it.

Dial board had a bug. Occasionally it doesn't show properly the last line. 

It is happening when turn the dial to select a image file.

I found it on display routine and fixed the bug.

From this time, All LCD board will have this firmware on the dial board.

It can't be patched or updated by Firmware update way.

Hence, I should have the board for update it but, if you have AVR writer, you can do it by yourself.

Please email me me if you want new firmware with your name and board serial number too.
