Introduction

SD DISK][ Emulator is a slot type virtual DISK Emulator for APPLE][, ][+, //e and IIGS

It emulates two FDD or two Hard Drives and unlimitted working time disk replacement.

it doesn’t require any physical Floppy drive even diskette. it just required SD memory card with proper disk Image then you can enjoy as you have two Floppy Drive or Hard Disk. The SD DISK][ Emulator has an external dial controller for image selection and other interesting function control. it also provides expert console mode by USB serial connection.

And you can use a Bluetooth dongle board. so wireless connection is available with smart phone or Bluetooth equip computer.  

Install it in your APPLE2 computer and enjoy your APPLE2 as your younger time.

Dear APPLE II enthusiast,

 I glad to intruduce this new sound card for APPLE II owners..

This is the first Mocking board compatible FM chip sound card in the world.

It generate maximum 11 channel sound (Melody 6+5 Percussion instrument). 9 channel are using for the mocking board mode.

Actually Mocking board II,A,B,C are  using 6 channel sound and it assigned 6 chnnel for it and rest 3 channels are used  for noise and chorus.

It compatible to the APPLE ][, ][+ and //e and IIGS (But IIGS has limitted support of mocking board)

it can play beautiful music on your APPLE II

For better music, User can assign music instruments on each channel. it would bring  newer excitement,

Sound card provide native mode to control all function of sound chip(YM2413).

Hence you can control this sound card over the mocking board limitation.

PS2 keyboard adaptor for APPLE II and II+

INTRODUCTION

It is a PS2 keyboard  adaptor for APPLE][ and ][+ system.

If your system doens't have good keyboard or hard to maintain it,

if would be good choice to use your APPLE2 without inconviniences.

It is  morethan just keyboard adaptor and have several useful functions. 

Macro key

You can assign Function keys to macro key. it would be very useful to make own program of keyin on your APPLE2

it can hold maximum 40 letters for each Function key(F1~F12 except F3)

Assigned macro data will keep even if Powered off.

But, F3 key is recall key, which is hold last line and hold maximum 255 letters and not permanent data stored.

Capital and small letter support

Ofcause, your APPLE2 must have small letter fonts on the system.

And Shift + key is always Capital letter.

Serial Intput data to APPLE2 as key in

it has a serial input pin and Serial data will redirect to APPLE2 keyboard.

It may use some sort of data tranfer or remote key typing such as even wireless keyboard.

I designed new PCB for less costs and easy make.

It provided the UART connection but, I didn't receive any comments or feedback from user.

I guess that user don't use it.

I removed in this version and it focused only the BASIC and important Keyboard interface role for APPLE ][+.

Board looks better and easy to make it.

The price slight cheaper and It would be good for APPLE ][+ users who doesn't have good Keyboard due to the age.

I'm researching for new sound card.

And I got good progress now.

It is prototype SD Music card for APPLE II computer.

This sound card compatible with Mocking board but not 100% compatible yet.

Anyway, I will keep doing to make it better.

This is an integared dial controller with LCD board into one board. 

I changed dial knob and easy to press and left EXIT button to bigger one also same reason.

- Cable changed to more flexible one.

- LED have 2 color on some condition.

SD DISK][ Emulator can attach a LCD and it would be useful to access SD DISK][ Emulator board.

But, many of people want more compact and simple.

So, I'm keep going to improve Auto start menu system.

When It power ON the APPLE2, It shows simple menu as under then can select image file for booting disk.

I'm programming floppy emulation for DSK/NIB images and sub directory navigation.

This code is very small less than 512 bytes and also plan to put into ROM area for easy call.

Next firmware will have this function.

I started to make board for PS2 keyboard converter for apple][ & ][+.

This converter having useful functions in it.

Basically its act like keyboard for apple ant its support small letter by Caps lock.

and number pad.

This conveter doesn't work with APPLE//e nor IIc only work with APPLE II and II+.

Features 

1) It accept serial ASCII data  and will resend it to APPLE2 so you can send your data from your serial equipments. (5V TTL) even you can connect bluetooth serial connector as wireless keyboard.

2) F1~F12(except F3) key is Macro Key. you can define your own key macro.

eg) On the new line, type then press Alt+Fn then it will be in memory and can recall when you press Fn key again. (Momorised key data will be keep evenif power off)

3) F3 key is recall key. it will send last line again.

4) Reset -> Ctrl+Break assigned

5)  Upper arrow key and Down arrow support. Even APPLE][ will receive this key code and it works on many S/W.

6) Simple auto reapeat

7) ATX power supplier ON/OFF control by simple external wire.

Power switch and Keyboard power ON/OFF support. it will be useful some user who did modified  APPLE][ power supplier to ATX one as me and it need to modify little bit for power +Vsb.

Others

PS-2 keyboard should be a QWERTY.

Serial signal is +5V TTL type not RS232c signal.

SDBIOS.ROM

I'm glad to announce new firmware V2.58D

This firmware required ROMBIOS V1.81 minimum or Serial number From #70~

Without ROMBIOS upgrade, Your board wouldn't work HDD Emulation.

What was change?

Head moving routine optimized..

Buffer SAVE routine bug fixed.

And other some message changed. 

How to update firmware

WARNING

! Your APPLE][ must not lose electric power or be powered down while the firmware 

is updating.  If this happens, the SD Disk][ may to fail restart, or you won't be able to update firmware anymore.

In this case, please return the board to me for re-programming. (Free of charge to fix this issue but all shipping costs will be your responsibility).

If you are ready to upgrade, please read first and follow below carefully

1) Power OFF the APPLE][ and open the cover of your APPLE][.

2) Remove the SD Memory card only, leaving the Disk][ board in the computer. (Present working SD Memory card should work fine)

3) Copy the firmware(SDBIOS.ROM) to ROOT directory of SD Memory card and insert it SD card slot on Emulator board.

4) Push Dial button (YES) +Exit button simultaneously, then power ON the APPLE][.

5) Then release a while later. You will see as 'system check..................................'(if set 115200baud) on the terminal screen.

6) A while later, SD DISK][ Emulator will restart.

7) Once the SD DISK][ restarts, re-programming of the SD Disk][ card is complete.  Re-start your computer to enjoy your updated SD Disk][

To determine the ROM version in your Apple IIc, type PRINT PEEK (64447) at the command prompt. The ROM version is returned by the IIc as follows:

Reading very good

Writing good

Format not good

Reading is very good and really do as I exptected.

Writing is good but, some of copy tool can't use it properly.

Format is not good, it works but not stable on DOS3.3

I think that this problem due to real diskette with virtual DISK.

Anyway, I will research some more about the format function.

SD DISK][ Emulator external testing board

i'm testing SD DISK][ external emulator for APPLE ][,//e & IIc.

It is external DISK emulator and working Read/Write as DISK][ on my APPLE][+.

One LCD board will be put over the PCB and the size would be recude for better shapes.

I completed LCD board as below.

It can display 6 lines 21 column with small font and 6 lines 14 column with Big font.(Selectable by Switch)

It make sound while DISK running and turn the dial. 

Anyway, I will include this LCD board for SD DISK][ Emulator card.

So, you may purchase it soon on the eBay

LCD screen start working properly.

This LCD screen is small but it would be useful to use SD DISK][ Emulator.

It support two modes as below.

I will add some more functions then it would be completed.

I start to draw this PCB and I will say some more after have PCB. :)

Big font mode (14 column)

Small font mode (21 column display)

Under slide switch is mode selection Small font / Big font

As you know, SD DISK][ Emulator have cache memory to access HDD mode.

Cache size is total 512KB and using for HDD emulation.

Cache needed to extend the life of SD card, cause of flash memory cell has limited life.

If write too many times, the cell will die and can not be contain proper data.

Anyway, not only this issue but, also can speed up HDD emulation.

The cache management worked as followed FIFO order.

 It was easy to apply on MPU but, it has some points to enhance.

When APPLE2 request read on disk, Emulator have to access SD memory card and give to APPLE2.

But, when APPLE2 request same location of data again. SD DISK][ Emulator doesn't read SD card again.

It will give just cached data on SRAM.  So it become faster than read again from SD card..

And when it needs to write SD emulator caches it and wait for a while. During this period if write again.. it just put into cache memory again if duplicated location. It will update the cache memory bloc then write only one time.

It is efficiency way.

But, there is some weak point.

It is happening when cache going to full by read/write data.

If became full, SD emulator try to assign new buffer so, have to delete some of location on cache area.

In this case, it will erase block as followed FIFO order. Even if often R/W location.

Hence, I decide to change this buffer assign order.

I used the LEVEL for cached block.

Each cached block has level(256steps) and if Read/Write occured, the level is increasing.

So it could be a nice  indicator to distingsh compare to other blocks.

When it needs to ease some blocks, lower leveled blocks would be deleted and will be use for buffer.

Higher level block will remain until to disappear other lower level cache blocks.

So, often R/W block will remain and work well for the function of cache.

This function will be integrated from V2.58 firmware.

I'm full testing and working fine at all.

I am building a menu program for drive image selection.

In fact, It's better to store into BOOT Rom, but, I found a way to integrate it without boot ROM code.

I tested this function by APPLESOFT BASIC and will be convert it to ASM code.

After that, Your SD DISK][ Emulator will boot and a show up a menu on your APPLE2 computer.

It would be useful way to use without other display terminal or LCD screen.

Please wait to complete it.

I will announce with new firmware even if have simple function.

I am working for APPLE IIGS with SD DISK][ Emulator.

SD DISK][ Emulator RW BIOS doesn't good for APPLE IIGS cause of some timing issue there.

And I decide to change main RW routine but ROM BIOS also have to changed.

The performance of Hard disk have to reduced for stabler and apply for IIGS. 

It has some reading issue so internally retry few times.

Someday can support for IIGS too.

Dear customer,

SD DISK][ Emulator is working on APPLE IIGS but, PRODOS8 hard drive and FDD(DISK][) only.

It doesn't work with GSOS, it have faster speed and SD don't syncronize properly.

And now I have APPLE IIGS and start research this issue.

I have good progress for it.

I will announce when I finished it.
