How to update firmware

WARNING

! Your APPLE][ must not fail electric power while the firmware updating.  

If this happens, the SD Disk][ may to fail restart, or you won't be able to update firmware anymore.

In this case, please return the board to me for re-programming. (Free of charge to fix this issue but all shipping costs will be your responsibility).

If you are ready to upgrade, please read first and follow below carefully

1) Power OFF the APPLE][ and open the cover.

2) Eject SD Memory card

3) Copy new firmware(SDBIOS.ROM) to ROOT directory.

4) Push Dial button(YES) +Exit button simultaneously, then power ON the APPLE][

5) Then release button some seconds later then You will see as 'system check..................................' on LCD and S/W terminal screen.

6) A while later, SD DISK][ Emulator will restart automatically.

7) Power OFF/ON your APPLE II and enjoy it.

Hi Friends,

I would like to add PO image format support on SD DISKII Plus.

In fact, the PO format is almost similar as 'DSK' format. 

and Just rename PO file to DSK, It would work.

It just has different sector order for prodos but, DOS3.3 also can read it.

IBM PC HDD using this idea as the interleave.

Anyway, I add converter function in it.

It works now and will include into new release firmware version.

New SD DISK II Emulator, SD DISK][ plus emulator is going to finish.

It is final testing board and working fine.

What is differences,

SD DISK][ Emulator is first my board for DISK II replacement and HDD emulation with SD card.

This new version is SD DISK ][ Plus , Optimized circuits and have wide compatibility.

Works good on APPLE ][,][+,//e, IIgs (Except APPLE I and APPLE IIc/IIc+(no Slot))

It emulate two 32MB HDD or two 5.25" FDD.

It would be an another SD DISK Emulator.

Used an ARM 32bits processor and CPLD.

I will show what is different compare to previous one.

It would be very interesting project for me.

This is new SD DISK II Emulator plus testing version.

I'm testing it on  APPLE IIe in that time

Emulate as two HDD with unlimited HDD image replace capability.

Emulate as tow FDD (DISKII) with unlimited HDD image replace capability.

Used Angled connector for LCD Dial controller.

Change seldom using serial pins to upper location.

Still ready for Bluetooth serial dongle.

Tested on APPLE ][+ FDD emulation works

Tested on APPLE //e HDD and FDD emulation works

Tested on APPLE IIGS HDD and FDD emulation works

It works but, It has slight different compare to 5V CPLD version.

Stability little different not very good on my testing.

It rarely error about 1% while reading.

I will try to make it as perfect as previous testing version.

Hi friends,

This is new version of SD DISK II Emulator for APPLE2 computer.

This version changed components and optimized for less soldering error.

The total chips counts are lessen for less complication. (I really hard to make previous version)

ROM changed to another type (PLCC) and it would safer even send it by the POST.

Other small chips optimized into CPLD so, simpler and less time consume to make it.

LED changed to surface type; it looks better.

Connector for Dial was changed angle; it wouldn't interfere to other neighbor board in slot.

BIOS Switch Omitted; Automatic ON and OFF.

It works on

APPLE ][ & APPLE ][ plus (previous version had FDD write issue but, It works good now)

APPLE II (APPLE 2e normal version)

APPLE //e (APPLE 2e enhanced and platinum)

APPLE IIGS

No configuration or mode changed required for all APPLE II 

Just Insert it in slot#6 and connect dial controller..

Then Turn it ON and select your favorite DISK image file for your favor.

It would be announced on eBay about 3 weeks later.

Previous version owner still can use newer firmware without change.

I will work for it.

If you install the DISK II Emulator on your APPLE IIGS, 

You have to adjust slot configuration to 'your card'.

This is the best manual for APPLE IIGS users.

I got a nice file from Mr. David Shaver.

He is one of my customer of SD DISK][ Emulator.

He has a Rana system FDD on APPLE ][ which have two heads and double capacity compare to DISK][.

He extracted disk from his old DISKETTE.

It would be useful if anyone has the RANA DRIVE.

Unfortunately I don't have it.

It boots as below but you need DOS3.3 booting disk to see files in it.

Dial board had a bug. Occasionally it doesn't show properly the last line. 

It is happening when turn the dial to select a image file.

I found it on display routine and fixed the bug.

From this time, All LCD board will have this firmware on the dial board.

It can't be patched or updated by Firmware update way.

Hence, I should have the board for update it but, if you have AVR writer, you can do it by yourself.

Please email me me if you want new firmware with your name and board serial number too.

Firmware updated to V2.59O :)

Added Boot menu ON/OFF setup

You can ON or OFF the Power ON File selection menu.

Fixed file list bug

it shows only HDV/2MG files evenif mode changed to FDD.

Now fixed and following the mode command.

Accept terminal command while showing Power ON Menu.

If you power ON APPLE II, SD DISK][ was waited until select file but, from now you can enter terminal commands.

It is more useful anyway.

How to update new firmware?

Please refer the manual or HELP.

Enjoy with this new firmware for your SD DISK][ Emulator.

Dear all,

New ROM code announced for SD DISK][ Emulator.

It was fixed non showing 2nd HDD on GSOS.

If you are not using GSOS, not required to update the ROM code.

To update to this ROM code,

You need ROM Writer such as the Willem ROM Writer.

If you have ROM Writer, you can erase and re-write the ROM chip (ROM chip is written as ROMBIOS V1.82 or EN29F002)

How to do it.

1) Carefully remove ROMBIOS V1.82 ROM(EN29F002) from SD DISK][ Emulator board.

2) Use your ROM writer ans select proper chip (EN29F002) then erase and write the attached file.

3) Return the ROM chip into the SD DISK][ Emulator.

If you have any question, Please let me know.

Dear APPLE2 fans,

These days, I'm working for Boot menu driven firmware.

My purpose is that easy to use the SD DISK][ Emulator on your APPLE II.

This menu will appear when power on your APPLE II and user can select image file for boot.

Therefore, you can run game DISK without other connection.

I'm trying to add some more functions but, I'm not good at ASM programming and it takes time.

When It be ready, I will announce it.

Now, I'm back to the SD DISK][ Emulator.

For several weeks, I spend all of my time to make SD Smart Drive for Local Korean users.

Now, I have time for SD DISK][ Emulator again.

I could have some more experience with GSOS on APPLE IIGS and intensive knowledge about Smart port protocol.

A week ago, I found there is a error or bug on SD DISK][ Emulator.

It just show one HDD after GSOS boots.

In fact, SD DISK][ Emulator is mostly focused for APPLE //e and it was good enough to play with it.

But, a few month ago, It can run on APPLE IIGS with GSOS and PRODOS 16.

In my young time, I never used the APPLE IIGS and even couldn't have chance to see it.

And I didn't know how to use it and not familiar with GUI interface on APPLE II. 

Some weeks ago, I have a gift of Mouse for APPLE IIGS and I could test on SD Smart Drive.

After have enough environment for testing, I could start for APPLE IIGS with SD Smart Drive.

Now, can go for SD DISK][ Emulator.

It shows only one HDD. Why?

In fact, SD DISK][ Emulator have two HDD but, GSOS doesn't detect second HDD.

I dig it and tested made several cases.

There are different way to detect DISK between PRODOS and GSOS.

Prodos used simply way to detect Block device on firmaware.

But, GSOS using similar way as the Smart port.

In fact, SD DISK][ Emulator isn't a smart port device, It is an intelligent block device.

And I flag it as Removable device, cause user can replace it anytime while using APPLE II.

But, Now The time became to change of ROMBIOS.

Updating of ROMBIOS it should not often happend cause it isn't good for customer, 

Cause it required a device such as Willem ROM Writer to update it.

And new ROMBIOS is under testing.

It shows now two HDDs so, user can run 2MG image file after Boot GSOS from HDD1.

Sorry for late updates but, no one mentioned about this issue.

Maybe some users only want to use it on APPLE //e or ][+.

Anyway, Better support for APPLE IIGS is on going now.

I will announce this ROM Code for users.

If you have a ROM writer, such as the willem  ROM writer, 

You can update ROM Code by yourself.

Or have to order to me.

Please wait for some more time to be completed the testing.

This is an integared dial controller with LCD board into one board. 

I changed dial knob and easy to press and left EXIT button to bigger one also same reason.

Please wait for some more day to see on eBay.

- Cable changed to more flexible one.

- LED have 2 color on some condition.

- Busy LED ommited but will on  DRV1/2 LED.

- Buttons are moved to left.

- RIght side only has dial.

SD DISK][ Emulator can attach a LCD and it would be useful to access SD DISK][ Emulator board.

But, many of people want more compact and simple.

So, I'm keep going to improve Auto start menu system.

When It power ON the APPLE2, It shows simple menu as under then can select image file for booting disk.

I'm programming floppy emulation for DSK/NIB images and sub directory navigation.

This code is very small less than 512 bytes and also plan to put into ROM area for easy call.

Next firmware will have this function.

This firmware required ROMBIOS V1.81 minimum or Serial number From #70~

Without ROMBIOS upgrade, Your board wouldn't work HDD Emulation.

What was change?

How to update firmware

2) Remove the SD Memory card only, leaving the Disk][ board in the computer. (Present working SD Memory card should work fine)

3) Copy the firmware(SDBIOS.ROM) to ROOT directory of SD Memory card and insert it SD card slot on Emulator board.

4) Push Dial button (YES) +Exit button simultaneously, then power ON the APPLE][.

5) Then release a while later. You will see as 'system check..................................'(if set 115200baud) on the terminal screen.

6) A while later, SD DISK][ Emulator will restart.

7) Once the SD DISK][ restarts, re-programming of the SD Disk][ card is complete.  Re-start your computer to enjoy your updated SD Disk][
