Dear friends,


I started to make another Z80 processor card for APPLE II.

I have though it since I made the Z80 Turbo7 card.

As you may know, the Z80 Turbo7 card is Z80 softcard compatible one but, when I finished it,

I received some of email, they are want another type of Z80 card, PCPI compatible one.

In fact, I didn't have interest in the PCPI Z80 card cause of I didn't have experience and no child time memory with it.

But, It looks interesting.. cause it works 4Mhz or 6Mhz even faster...

On my study of Softcard, it can't run so fast because of this designed really depend on APPLE II BUS.

But PCPI card doesn't use APPLE II Bus for memory access.

It has different design and method unlike Z80 softcard.

For some weeks study about the PCPI Z80 card, I finally understood how it works.

Now, I finished drawing PCB and ordered.

I will assemble and will test for full functioning PCPI compatible card.

Andmore, I add signal pins for VDP Option board hence finally it would work with the VDP option board so it would work 4Mhz or even faster speed.

I already experienced with TMS9918(VDP) and I'm sure to make it run with faster speed of Z80.

Target Speed of Z80 is depends on the what I could have hence I will try even 16Mhz or more...

And more good thing with this PCPI card.


* User may access the VDP Option board without Z80 co-work, 

It means, 65C02 would handle the VDP and Sound chip direct. It results could have as another Arcade board on APPLE II.


You may see another PCPI compatible card some weeks later..


* Next steps;

In fact this Z80 isn't the final goal.

I will use Z180 processor on this PCPI design and it would work as Z80 and even Z180 function could use on this board and you could expect higher speed.. Maybe 33Mhz would work with this design.

Is it good enough for your Z80 compatible PCPI card?

* What is disadvantage of PCPI Z80 card;

Many of people just know advantage of the PCPI Z80 card but, 

They are not know about the weakness of PCPI card.. so, I'm explaining to let them know the truth..

You would interesting about my concern.
Softcard using APPLE II's RAM direct and syncing APPLE II Bus.

Otherwise PCPI card is isolated and using gates to receive/transmit data between 65C02 with Z80.


Softcard Z80 could use direct the APPLE II devices without service call.

Even speaker sound, it could make simply on ASM code even Basic(Just need proper address of device on APPLE II)

Keyboard direct reading or Joystick reading also possible.

Also Peripheral card and 64KB AUX memory also could access even more memory could access by it.

As we know the soft switch on APPLE II, Softcard could handle it.

One of good example is GBASIC.

It could handle the graphic mode on APPLE II. 

If you could do some more, maybe DHGR also possible..


But, PCPI card, can't do all of above or limited possible.

But faster on CP/M works.


So, Which is interesting on your hobby job.

If you are willing to use APPLE II resources, go Softcard Z80 card.

If you are willing to use CP/M enhanced hobby, go to the PCPI Z80 card.

This is my conclusion.

Please don't argue with it we are doing it for fun not for serious job with headaches :)
