공지사항

Do you want faster a Smart Drive HDD?
Of course, that is better than slow. :)

We don't want wait long time for booting or run a program.
That's what we want to have.

Hence, I'm keep going to develop newer faster Smart Drive.
Much faster MPU will kick your APPLE II run faster.

The new MPU got 5.9 times faster and 32bits processor.
So, also data processing could be much faster that AVR.

I used this MPU for new brain for new smartport device on APPLE II.

In the beginning, I got some difficulties cause this processor isn't not familiar not like the AVR.
After lots of times tries, I could make it read the SD card and could it boot the Prodos 2.0.3. :D

Of course, performance increased and boot was faster. it takes around 2.44 secs to boot on APPLE IIc.

and took less than 2 secs on APPLE IIGS.

And tested the GSOS booting too.

How long takes to boot?

It takes about 1 minute 12 seconds.

As followed analysed the package times, It is really faster than AVR one.

AVR one takes around 1min 42secs but, It speed up and less 30 secs spent for boot it up.

And you may guess other device was faster?.

You have to test same image file some image is smaller for boots.

Prodos booting 2.03; + 48% faster on APPLE IIc

Data Reading 65 blocks(each 512 bytes): +69% faster

GSOS booting: +41% speed up

DISK reading performance was increased a lots, but overall of booting time doesn't decreased a lots.

As followed my measure,

512 bytes Reading took lessthan 1ms(average).

Anyway, it wasn't faster as 5.9 Times.

Why?

Because, APPLE took time to reading data and buffering and analyzing packets to load into the memory.

And the SD card got speed limit,

AVR one using 8 Mhz SPI 1bit mode, but this testing board using 24Mhz and 4 bits mode.

So, estimated Reading speed could have 3 x 4 = 12 times

Other packet processing also may took 1/5.9 AVR one.

And I counted total data blocks for GSOS.

It required 1895 blocks for booting.

What does it measn?

Each block took less than 1ms, hence if took 0 seconds for prepare the packet, it can only reduce 1.895 Second..

So, I can say, this new Smart port Device is one of best one.

It is only Reading device now, but, some days later I can complete Write function.

Read only HDD isn't useful and not proper device.

Another concern about disk management,

I don't like to use DISK Partition for disk emulation.

Programming is easier and simpler than file type access method.

But, It has a big limitation of using HDD.

Because of partition method, It can have for a partition.

But, I'm using file based Hard Disk.

It doesn't have limitation of HDD to hold and no required partition jobs.

Just choose HDD image file for HDD emulation on your APPLE II.

and replace it what you want and simply have time to enjoy your APPLE II.

For now, I have to complete some other one such as Writing on SD card and User interface.

Please keep watch and wait for newer and ultimate fastest HDD for Smart port on your APPLE IIc,IIGS...

I've bad English but, hope you understand what I want to say. :)

Thanks for your reading.
